1 Day Mini Cleanse?

Hmmmm, let’s see if it’s right for you.

Do you ever feel like your body just needs a quick reset? Perhaps you are a little more tired than usual. Perhaps you’ve been working too much and not exercising enough.  Perhaps you’ve been eating a little more than usual or eating things that just don’t jive with your body. Whatever it is, you are just a bit “off” and need something to kick-start, reboot, refresh your body.

Well, I’ve got the solution! This 1 Day Mini Cleanse is a great way to provide your body with a wee refresh & reboot! My 1 Day Mini Cleanse includes only whole fresh fruits and vegetables, what I call “clean” food and your body will respond in very positive ways with even one day of this cleanse.

This cleanse includes drinking Green GREEN smoothie all day until dinner, followed by a great BIG Green Salad. The best part is YOU WON’T BE HUNGRY! You can drink as much smoothie and eat as much salad as you need to with only two conditions:

  1. only eat when you are hungry and;
  2. stop eating when you are full **.

**TIP 1:  Don’t forget, feeling “full” on healthy “clean” food is a much “lighter full” than “full” on not so healthy food which is more like a “sluggish need to sleep and relax NOW” kinda full. Just saying 😉 ~ 1 Day Mini Cleanse

1-Day Mini Cleanse

Here’s how the 1-Day Mini Cleanse works in 4 – EASY PEASY Steps:

  1. Start your day with a large glass of water with juice of 1/2 lemon. If you are chilled you are welcome to use hot water, or if you prefer you can use warm or even cold water. Starting your day with lemon water helps reduce your body’s overall acidity, (yes lemon is acidic but once metabolized it does not create acidity in the body), it also helps to wakeup the liver and flush out unwanted toxins.
  2. Throughout the morning and all through the day, enjoy 2 litres (8 cups/64oz) of the Cleansing Green Smoothie (recipe below).  For example you might enjoy 500ml/2cups at 3 hour intervals – 8am and again at 11am, 2pm and 5pm. Note: If 2 litres isn’t enough for you, then by all means make a 2nd batch or 1.5 batches…listen to your body and don’t starve yourself!! Drink enough to be full**.
  3. For dinner enjoy a GREAT BIG Clean Green Salad (recipe below).
  4. Also drink as much water or herbal tea as you like throughout the day and evening. Make sure you have at least 6-8 glasses of water (hot or cold) throughout the day/evening. I also love hot water (yup, plain hot water) I find it warms my insides and feels surprisingly satisfying, especially on days when you aren’t having any cooked foods.

And that’s it! How easy peasy is that! ~ 1 Day Mini Cleanse

1 Day Mini Cleanse ~ Cleansing Green Smoothie

Green smoothie (i.e. smoothies with only a little fruit or no fruit at all) will leave your body feeling refreshed, clean and energized – more so than any fruit based smoothie. Don’t get me wrong, I love fruit based smoothies (as you know from my gazillion recipes), but there’s something especially wonderful about the cleansing and refreshing effect of true green smoothies.

Like most green GREEN smoothies, the recipe I’ve included below is chocked full of nutrients and is an excellent source of Vitamins A & C, it’s high in fibre, great source of iron and calcium. The best part is that both cilantro and parsley are great cleaners.

Parsley cleans the blood and gives you fresh breath and the high levels of chlorophyl helps cleanse your entire system. Cilantro binds with toxins and helps eliminate them from the body. So you are in good cleansing hands with this Smoothie 😉

Makes approx. 2 litres

  • 4 cups coconut water (or filtered water if you have no coconut water)
  • 1/2 bunch parsley
  • 1 bunch cilantro
  • 1 lemon, peel/rind removed
  • 1 apple, cored and chopped
  • 1/2 head romaine

Add all ingredients in a highspeed blender (makes them more fluffy than standard blenders, just sayin’ ;-)) in the order listed. Blend on low speed and gradually increase speed. Blend on high until smooth and frothy.

You’ll want to store the smoothies in jars – if you have it, use 4 x 500ml mason jars. Fill the jars to the top (the less air the better as it’s the air exposure that will reduce the effectiveness of the enzymes (see Why Eat Raw).  Screw lids on very tight and store in the fridge. If you are on the go, add the jars to a travel bag with ice packs.

Now if you feel 2 litres isn’t enough for you, by all means create another 1/2 or full batch. If you make too much you can always use it the morning after.  Just be sure to drink what your body needs and don’t starve yourself. Remember to drinks lots of water (hot or cold) and herbal tea as this will also help take the edge off.

1 Day Mini Cleanse ~ Great BIG Clean GREEN Salad

For dinner enjoy this salad:

  • 1-2 heads of whatever combination of greens you like (spinach, romaine, kale, etc.)
  • 2-3 cups of your favourite raw veggies (tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery, cucumber, beets, etc.)
  • 1 big handful of sprouts like sunflower sprouts, alfalfa sprouts, pea sprouts, etc (sprouts are amazing living foods with tons of protein)
  • For added flavour & spice you can add:
    • any fresh herbs you like, i.e. cilantro, parsley, thyme, basil (you can use dry herbs, but I think fresh tastes more yummy and fresh also offers more nutrients)
    • some minced garlic and/or ginger
    • a chopped up hot pepper!!
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • lots of fresh ground pepper
  • NOTE: just make sure you don’t use any oil, no nuts/seeds, no avocado, no grains or legumes, no potatoes (sweet or regular).

Add chopped greens (spinach, romaine and/or kale, etc.) to a large bowl. Add chopped veggies, chopped sprouts and toss together.  Add herbs, garlic/ginger and/or hot peppers.  Top with juice from lemon and lots of fresh ground pepper.  Toss well together.

Enjoy as much as you like to feel full! For some that will be 1-2 bowls, for others you may eat 3-4 bowls. Eat what your body needs and the rest can be saved for lunch the next day. Keep in mind the “full” you feel after a day of cleansing will be a “nice light” full vs. the almost sluggish full you feel when you eat a heavy meal 😉

Enjoy and Happy 1 Day Mini Cleanse-ing! xox ~ 1 Day Mini Cleanse

That’s it, that’s all. How EASY PEASY is that?

I’d love to hear how you enjoyed the 1 Day Mini Cleanse, feel free to chare your comments below!

  1. Erica says:

Drinking my first green smoothie for the day. It’s been a while since I have juiced, drank my veggies. I forgot how much I enjoy it!

    1. Hey Erica, that’s great news! I hope your 1st was a yummy one 🙂 Your body is loving you for drinking your veggies, good for you xox

  2. Valeria says:

Can I make this in a regular blender?

    1. Hi Valerie – sure you can use a regular blender. You may need to do it in batches and you may need to blend a little longer to get a smooth texture – but you can make in any blender 🙂 I hope you enjoy xox

  3. Julia Ng says:

I thought I’d try this today. Already quite hungry and there are at least 6 hours before I can eat dinner. I won’t have enough Green smoothie left to get me through, and I don’t have the ingredients for more green smoothie. Could I do one with spinach, honeydew, cucumber and cilantro?

    1. Oh yes, absolutely Julia. That sounds like a delicious combination. Let me know how it goes. Catherine

      1. Julia Ng says:

It turned out good. I do t think this cleaning thing is really for me though. I need to get through a couple more hours. Looking forward to warm food tomorrow!

        1. I hear you re: warm food 🙂 one thing I like to do is have a warm cup of water… I find alternating warm and cold water throughout the day can help. I got hooked on having warm water a few years ago and I love it, it really warms you up – give it a try! Thanks so much for sharing… stay tuned, I plan to also amend this cleanse to include a soup. Do you think having a soup would have helped you get through the day a bit better? thanks again xoxo

  4. Kara O says:

Needed a one day cleanse after returning home for the holidays- was feeling gross and sluggish! Just tried my first smoothie- was apprehensive when I saw the ingredients but I found it surprisingly delicious! I plan to do this for a couple of days…are there any broths you would recommend to take the edge off?

    1. Hi Kara – that’s great you found the smoothies delicous! There’s no doubt a few days of smoothies until dinner will leave you feeling more energized and leaner! Green smoothies (the greener the better) are the best “broth” to take the edge off 😉 if you combine with hot water/herbal tea and 8-10 glasses of water throughout the day, this will also help speed up the cleansing and help to take the edge off even more. Good luck and enjoy! Let me know if that helps? Cat xox

  5. Denise Spencer says:

Is there any alternative to cilantro in the cleanse? I am among the 10 percent of the population who can’t stand it.

    1. Hi Denise – if you don’t like cilantro you can use any other dark green, like parsley, spinach, kale. As a general rule of thumb I say if you don’t like something green, replace it with something of the same colour. I hope that helps. Enjoy!

  6. Jill says:

I am having digestive issues (constipation). Would this be helpful for that?

    1. Hi Jill – thanks for your note. I’m not a medical professional so I can’t given specific insight related to your digestive issues. What I can say, is that for me when I follow the 1-day cleanse (well, I actually follow it for a few days), my insides & outsides feel a whole lot better. For me I have found the key is sticking to greens & veggies only (whether in smoothie or salad) PLUS drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water througout the day. The combo of the greens and water is sure to cleanse your system and reset your body to feel cleaner and more energized! Does that help? 😉 xoxo

  7. John P says:

I have been on a “clean” high-protein diet and have been looking for a way to cleanse and reboot and this looks to be just what I’ve been looking for. I will definitely give it a try this weekend.

I was wondering if you had any nutritional info on the smoothie. I saw that you had it on the Green Green smoothie. Would that be similar? Thanks!!!!

    1. Hey John – that’s so great about your “clean” high protein diet. Also glad you like the mini-cleanse. I do have nutritional info for some of the smoothies, but not all. But yes, the green green smoothie nutritional information is probably a good indication of what some of the green smoothies would include. Of course they are all a little different, but the true green smoothies are definitely similar. I hope that helps! Enjoy xox

  8. Carmen says:

I tried this almost 8 months ago and I could swear the recipe was just a little different. In addition to all the ingredients listed, Kale, spinach, and sprouts were added to the smoothie. Although it was rather strong I slightly preferred it, this way is great too though. So I guess my question is would it be not so great to add those other things to the smoothie? OR is it one of those “do what feels right for your body” sort of things?

    1. Hi Carman – I don’t think I’ve changed this recipe, although I must admit, at times I do tweak recipes – that said, I wonder if you are thinking about my Green GREEN smoothie recipes? A few of them have kale, spinach and sprouts – and you can certainly replace the smoothie that’s listed here with any of the Green GREEN smoothie recipes (here’s the link: I’m a firm believer to “do what feels right for your body”, absolutely! I also believe for any sort of cleanse, your body will benefit most with more greens and little or no fruit, so the greener the better! So you can definitely use any of the green GREEN smoothie recipes or create your own green-combo ;-)! Let me know if that helps… hugs, Cat zoo

  9. Caroline says:

Hi. I am looking for a little weightless because I have to be in a bikini in 3 days. Does this 1 day mini-cleanse help with weight loss at all? Would I be able to do it for 2 days? Please let me know. Thanks! 🙂

    1. Caroline – the 1-day cleanse is intended as a mini-reset for your body by feeding it clean whole foods, which will get you started on the road of feeling cleaner, more energized and getting your body on track. It can definitely be followed for a few days. I’m not sure if you will loose weight, everyone is different and how your body reacts will depend on your eating habits before you satrt – it’s not really intended as a weight loss program – but it will start you on the path of feeling more energized and cleaner. If you are looking to drop a few pounds and feel more energized, my 3-day green smoothie cleanse & the ARV Green Smoothie Transformation e-guide will result in weight loss. You can find more under the eBooks section if that’s of interest. Does that help? Cat xox

  10. Lily says:

I love the sound of this smoothie, but I think I may struggle to find romaine, what would be a good substitue if I can’t find it? also, exactly how much is a bunch? could you give me an idea of how much it would weigh? could you add fresh lime as well? thanks for the recipes 🙂

    1. Hi Lily… thanks, I’m glad you like the sound of the smoothie 😉 And thanks for letting me know I had “1/2 bunch romaine”… should have read 1/2 head (I’ve corrected ;-0). If you can’t find romaine (I believe also called Coss in Aussi/NZ), you can actually use any other green that you like. Spinach is good and is the mildest green, kale would be nice as well. You can definitely add fresh lime… lime and/or lemon are nice in any smoothie. As for the weight of the romaine – I don’t weigh any of the ingredients, in fact I’m very much of a “wing-it” kind of recipe maker… especially when it comes to smoothies. So I would say add 1 handfuls, and taste the smoothie after it’s mixed – I dunk a spoon in the blender to get a wee taste -and then you can adjust by adding more of the greens (or any other ingredients). Does that help?…. xox

  11. kim says:

I am looking to start a weekly one day cleanse – looks good (but have to start next week because I have a bday brunch to go to, and it ain’t happenin’ then eeek)

    1. Catherine says:

Hey Kim – next week works! I’ll be here if you have questions. Enjoy! xo

  12. Stacey says:

Absolutely! Thank you. Avocado sounds like a great choice.

  13. Stacey says:

Catherine, I love your site. Your recipes are wonderful and I am definitely going to do the 1day cleanse. I’ll let you know how it goes. On a different note, a lot of smoothies call for bananas. Any suggestions for a substitute? I can’t eat bananas.

    1. Awww thanks so much Stacey, I’m so glad you like it. The 1 day cleanse is certainly popular, I hope you enjoy. You’ll have to let me know how it goes. Bananas? Well with any of the ingredients you can pretty much skip or replace with something you like – it’s all about using ingredients you love! I find bananas add a creamy texture and also add a bit of sweetness… so to replace the creaminess I love to add avocado and sweetness I often add dates… not that you have to add avocado and dates, but it gives you an idea. But you can certainly skip the banana completely. Does that help?

  14. Summer says:

Wow, this sounds amazing! I’ve been feeling really sluggish lately and look forward to trying this.

    1. Thanks Summer, it is a great way to kick-start your body. You’ll have to let me know how it goes… Cat xox

  15. Kyle M says:

I am mid day into this today. I do not like cilantro or parsley so this isnt the best tasting day I’ve ever had BUT I have not been hungry at all…. I’ve never looked forward to a salad so much in my life!!! 🙂

    1. Hey Kyle – wow, so great that you persevered even when you didn’t like the cilantro/parsley – that’s so great, good for you. I can’t wait to hear how you faired after the “how so wanting” salad 😉 Let me know how it went!! Cat xox

  16. Emilie M says:

If you don’t have a lemon on hand, can you use lemon juice? How much?

    1. Absolutely Emilie. I’d use a couple of tablespoons to start and have a taste, you can add more if you like.

  17. This looks great! I was feeling “off” earlier this week so I started the master cleanse. It has taken me through a “journey” of hunger, detox and everything else you can imagine. Next time I will try this!

    1. Sorry to say but I’m not a proponent of the Master Cleanse as it doesn’t give your body the nutrients needed. I tried it myself way back, but have since discovered that my body actually thrives 100% more with a smoothies/juice/greens like the one’s I have here, and with my green cleanses I actually feel more “cleansed”, rejuvenated and experience the same weight loss (when that’s what I’m looking for) than the Master Cleanse! Just saying 😉 I’d love to hear if you have the same experience when you try this one next time! xox

  18. Stephanie says:

It’s my birthday tomorrow so Monday, after the celebrations I am going to do this cleanse. Already have my grocery list made out.

    Look forward to it!!

    1. Well, a VERY Happy Birthday to you Stephanie. Monday sounds perfect, that’s so exciting you already have the grocery list!! Can’t wait to hear more about your cleanse day. Have a fab Bday. Hugs Catherine xo

  19. Cici says:

Love this. And parsley and cilantro are awesome blood cleansers!!

    1. Thanks Cici… and you are so right, they are huge cleaners! xox
