I would very much like to get to know all of you a little better. YOU are my inspiration!!  I originally started Almost Raw Vegan as a creative outlet to share my love of creating plant-based eats, my love of photography with my love for creating websites. I never expected that so many might share my same interests. I can’t believe there are so many like-minded souls and I can’t believe all the sharing and love that has resulted. I feel incredibly blessed.

This blog has grown to be what it is today because of YOUR involvement. So although long overdue, I want to learn more about YOU. I want to know where you are from, what motivates you to seek plant-based eats, what helps you to feel your best, what might help you! I want to ensure ARV continues to meet your needs!! ♡♡

I have a QUICK SURVEY with only 5 Questions - I would love if you can take a few minutes to answer the questions for me! ♡♡

Well, we were fortunate enough to escape for a week this winter!!  A week of sun, sand!! Yipppee!!  But mostly, a week without snow, no cold, no shovelling, no fireplaces, no boots, no winter coats, no brushing snow off the car, no winter!!  Yeah!!

We enjoyed lots of sun, sand, tons of fresh fruits & vegetables, lots of D-vitamin, and mostly lots of rest and relaxation!!

Take a look at My YouTube VIDEO premiere at Iberostar Grand Bavaro!!  It’s perfect for ARVs like you and me. I can’t wait to go back :-)

Flexi Lexi’s 3-Day Juice Cleanse

Flexi Lexi’s 3-Day Juice Cleanse

It’s funny how things come to you sometimes, isn’t it?

It was the first week in March and into my mailbox came a new post from Beauty with Magdalena.  You remember Magdalena don’t you? Magdalena is the owner of Woman Divine and I wrote about My Experience with Woman Divine last September where I had an AMAZING facial treatment.  Ok, if you haven’t visited Woman Divine you will definitely want to!

So, in came a new post from Magdalena and she wrote about her experience with a juice cleanse, but not just any juice cleanse, it was Flexi Lexi’s Juice Cleanse.

Flexi YouTubeI read with great interest as just that morning I said to myself  ”Spring is coming and perhaps it’s time for a cleanse of some type” and with that I had a new lead to investigate.  I touched base with Magdalena and she had nothing but great things to say about Alexa and the program. I know one of the things that interested me was that Flexi Lexi juices were delivered directly to your door!  Yeahhhh, not only would I get a juice cleanse but I would get a break from food prep!! Just what I wanted. :-)

It occurred to me that I remembered seeing Alexa Spas the owner of Flexi Lexi which specializes in Culinary Nutrition & Juice Cleansing on CTV Ottawa Morning Live show some time ago, so I googled again and found a clip that was only a couple of weeks old called Juicing Trends with Alexa Spas!! How exciting!! I was sold!

I emailed her and later that day she sent me a summary of the service with some great insights including:

  • Why Juice Cleanse?
  • Benefits of Juice Cleansing
  • Pre-Cleanse
  • The Juices
  • The Program
  • Enhancing your Cleanse
  • Post-Cleanse

DSC_0002_watermark flexi 6 juicesI was so pumped!!  So I booked myself to start the following week – ok she is in hot demand – so if you are interested make sure you book with her sooner vs. later!

The night before you start your cleanse she delivers the juices to your door, all 18 of them – 6 each day for 3 days – all nicely packaged in 500ml mason jars. So colourful, so beautiful, so healthy!!

You drink the juices in the prescribed order and have one every 2-3 hours – she numbers them to make it easy :-) and you are free to drink as much water or herbal tea as you like during the day.

Here’s the low down on the juices:

  1. Energize with kale, spinach, cucumber, parsley, celery, apple, lemon
  2. Sassy with grapefruit, orange, lemon, spirulina
  3. Immune with carrot, apple, beet, lemon, ginger
  4. Satisfy with almond, hemp, dates, cinnamon, vanilla, h2o
  5. Digest with pineapple, apple, mint & ginger
  6. Detox with parsley, cilantro, apple, lemon

DSC_0002_watermark Flexi #4 AlmondSo I started Day 1 not knowing what to expect.  Would I be hungry? Would I get so hungry that I would cheat?

I’m happy to say I was completely satisfied for ALL 3 Days!!  Yes, really!!  Juicing doesn’t mean you ‘starve’ your body, it’s really the opposite.  With juicing you are feeding your body a mega dose of nutrients in a format that goes directly into your system and at the same time gives your digestive system a break and allows your body to focus on “cleaning itself up”!!  For myself, since my eating is pretty clean, I did not experience any detox symptoms at all, instead I enjoyed a wonderful spring refresh! :-)

So, if you are looking for an easy-peasy juice cleanse to refresh or reset your body and want to enjoy the bonus of having someone else do the work for you and gives you a break in the kitchen then Flexi Lexi’s 3-Day Juice Cleanse is the way to go. Without a doubt!!  Alexa has a really great thing going!!

Thanks a million Alexa, your juice cleanse was just what I needed. I feel amazing and I’m all ready for spring now.  I love it!!

ARV Viewer’s Choice Top 10 of 2012

ARV Viewer’s Choice Top 10 of 2012

It really hasn’t been that long since I started blogging Almost Raw Vegan – well it will be 2 years in May 2013 since I created AlmostRawVegan.com and I then joined Facebook a year ago in November 2011 – so I guess it has been a while.  Time sure does fly, doesn’t it?

When I first started, my intent was simply to give myself a creative outlet for my passions.  I love photography, I love website design, I love creating plant-based eats and finding the right-foods-for-me that allow me to feel my best, mind, body & soul.  Blogging was a way to combine all my passions into one and at the same time feed my creative soul.  It’s true, I chose to post to the world, but I really didn’t expect anyone to follow me – well, maybe a few friends and family – but I didn’t expect much more than that.

Was I wrong!!

As of today I’ve had over 64,000 visits at AlmostRawVegan.com and over 7300 followers on Facebook.   I can’t tell you how incredibly surprised and grateful I am with all the love and support I have received for you, my followers.  So many like-minded souls, who knew?.  It’s all your notes, support, likes, comments and feedback that continue to inspire me day after day to continue with my blogging and to follow my passion.  I feel so incredibly blessed.  So, from the bottom of my heart… I thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Here are the TOP 10 of 2012 as selected by all of YOU!! xox

Kris Carr Madness

Ok, so I’m thinking ….by now most of you have probably figured out that I’m a Kris Carr groupie. ;-)  Ever since I read Crazy Sexy Diet I have become a huge (HUGE) fan.  I think what I like most about her is she really educates us and provides us with the tools so that we can attend to our own health and make the right choices for our own situation.  I so love that!!  I feel empowered by all the insights she has shared!!  Not to mention her positive attitude and approach!!  Some of you may have already read my post My NEW Favourite Book!  If you haven’t already read her Crazy Sexy Diet, you will definitely want to have a read (or two ;-) )!!

And then, with the launch of her new website in September 2012, she has become even more engaged and is even more in the forefront with her audience.   I have not had the pleasure of meeting Kris Carr, but from her books, her blog, her facebook and her video’s she certainly seems to be a very warm, generous and kind soul!!  She seems to want nothing more than to share her experience to help others through their journey of healthier living – whatever that journey may be.

French Toast with Amaretto Crème

You may also know that I have tried many of her recipes over the last couple of years.  Her Buddha Bowl is one of my favourites!  And most recently from her soon to be released Crazy Sexy Kitchen (make sure you get a copy of the Sneak Peak of her book!!), I have tried her Save the Tuna Sandwich, French Toast with Ameretto Creme and Chickpea Crêpe with Artichoke & Mushroom!!  Chef Chad Sarno is amazing!!!  And all of these recipes were FANtastic!!  I sooo can’t wait to receive her new book Crazy Sexy Kitchen (make sure you pre-order if you havent’ already and you’ll also get access to her Cooking Classes!!)

OK… and then a few weeks ago I received a Tweet from Maria (I didn’t know a Maria, but then noticed on her Twitter account that she is an employee at KrisCarr.com!!  Oh my!!  Was I excited!!)…. and here Maria was, asking me (ME!) if I wanted to have one of my recipes posted in Kris Carr’s Newsletter and/or on her Recipe of the Week section on her website.

Would I?  T’ya, like d’uhhhh!!!

Having one of my recipes in Kris Carr’s Newsletter or on her Website, are you kidding me?  Oh my gawd, I was soooo soooo excited.  So honoured, so …. so in awwwh!  I was truly honoured that they contacted me – lill’ ol’ almost raw vegan me!!

Part of my regular morning ritual of checking & responding to followers at my Facebook page, checking all those I follow for their morning updates, sharing posts from others, posting my morning smoothy, and checking out Kris Carr’s Monday Newsletter and website…. and guess what?  My recipe is posted as Recipe of the Week!!!  Woot Woot!!!  Way to make my day!!

Chickpea Crêpe (Farinata)
with Mushrooms and Artichokes
(although I used a different filling)

My recipe as Recipe of the Week at KrisCarr.com!!!  Oh my gawd, that’s like being on the Oprah of plant-based eating!! :-D

And then a few weeks later she features my Beet Tomato & Cucumber Salad in her weekly Newsletter!!  Pinch me!!  What an honour!!

All I can say is – Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!  Your spirit is so generous, and I love how you share not only all the insight you have gained through your own experience, but I love how you engage and encourage others like myself to share their passion.  I feel so very honoured to be associated with KrisCarr.com and needless to say, I’m inspired that much more, to be as generous and engaging as you are!! xoxox

My experience at Woman Divine

My experience at Woman Divine

I recently discovered a new local company called Woman Divine, a holistic skin care and aromatherapy clinic.  I actually learned about the clinic through Facebook – wonderful marketing social networking tool that it is!! Woman Divine had “liked” my Almost Raw Vegan page and that was the start of an amazing discovery.

I was curious with the name and visited their facebook page and Website and oh my goodness…. I was so excited to discover that it was a local company.  I love local companies!  Ok, but I don’t just love it because it’s local.  What sparked my interest was that this company was not just about skin care, but holistic skin care and one of their services include a raw vegan facial treatments.  Ok, I was more than excited!!  I left a message to talk to Magdalena the owner to learn more, in the meantime I continued to delve through the information on her website.

One of the first things to catch my eye was (taken from WomanDivine.ca):

“Your skin is as unique as you; thus our treatments are always custom tailored. We work with specialized massage techniques, organic skin care products, raw vegan ingredients as well as essential and exotic vegetable oils to deliver results you desire. We stay away from fads and rather focus on the long term effect of our treatments, always approaching your beauty and health as one.

We proudly use Jurlique – a time-tested organic and bio-dynamic skin care line from Australia. We also personally create aromatic oil blends specific to your needs for each treatment you experience at our clinic.”

I mean what more do you want?  Custom treatment, organic, raw vegan, no fads, focus on long term…. all music to my ears. I had discovered a gem in my own backyard!!  Yeah!!

Turns out I missed the opportunity to speak with Magdalena as we played phone tag, but based on her phone message and advice I booked an appointment for a facial treatment right away using her ever-so-convenient Online Booking Tool.

The day had arrived and I couldn’t wait.  The clinic is located on the 2nd floor of an old house in the Westboro neighbourhood (hugely convenient for me so a definite plus), I noticed there was a Chiropractor business The Happy Spine on the first floor (note to self if I ever need a Chiropractor!!).  Up the stairs I went – oh but first I removed my shoes – and at the top I discovered a very calming and peaceful environment.  It was lovely.  I had a wonderful chat with Magdalena before the treatment started and discovered Woman Divine had opened 4 years earlier (how did I miss that!??) and she had an amazing  background which included massage therapy, aromatherapy, herbal medicine, nutrition and a passion for eastern beauty practices. You put all that together and you get a very unique approach to her treatments.

I loved how she explained the full process step by step before she started.  And I love how she spent time with me to better understand my overall health and wellness and any specific concerns I had.  She was genuinely interested in learning more about me so that she could create a treatment that was just right for me.

The entire treatment was an hour long and started with a cleansing.  She also placed cucumber over my eyes which was decadent, cooling and soothing.  Then came the warm steam to open the pores and prepare my skin for the exfoliation and extractions.  Next a relaxing massage of the shoulders, neck, face, scalp and I have to say the massage really relaxed me and took away the days (heck the weeks) worries… it was wonderful, I could just feel myself drift off into never never land… sigh!  Yes, I really did fall asleep!!  After all that came the face mask, the scent was wonderful which in itself was relaxing.  Another bonus? While the face mask was drying I was treated to a heavenly foot and calf massage.. the piece de resistance!!  I was in heaven…. HEAVEN….sigh….

Without a doubt that was the best facial treatment I have ever EVER had in my life… I had a nice chat with Magdelena after my appointment.  On my way home I was feeling so relaxed, so serene, so at peace with life…. so amazing that I decided I owed it to myself to capture that feeling on a regular basis!!   So the Online Booking Tool received monthly appointment requests from me for the next few months, oh ya baby… I’m going back for more!!!

Oh and before I forget, you’ll also want to check out her Blog – Beauty with Magdalena where you will find some great insight from making your own facial scrubs for sensitive skin, Papaya Coffee Body Scrub to her favourite raw vegan restaurant in Montreal and lots more.

Thanks Magdalena for an amazing experience and for sharing such wonderful insights… xox

Amazing Dinners at The Wellington Gastropub

Amazing Dinners at The Wellington Gastropub

The Wellington Gastropub

Ok, some of you may know – February is a special month for us – we have two big celebrations.   And we love to celebrate with a special dinner.

There are several vegan restaurants in town, but in my opinion there is really only one true vegan restaurant in town where you would want to enjoy a special evening and that’s Zen Kitchen.  And there’s no denying Zen Kitchen is a really great vegan restaurant and they also have raw vegan options on the menu which is an added bonus – we recently enjoyed their Valentine’s-in-a-box, (although we enjoyed it the weekend before Valentine’s Day) it was really fun and delicious, thanks to Caroline Ishii & David Loan’s creativity!!  But it’s also nice to have variety and try different places, different atmosphere and still enjoy something vegan. Granted there are many restaurants that include a vegetarian option on the menu, it’s rare you find vegan options on the menu (at least we have yet to find any, if there are any please let me know!!).   I do believe that we will soon see a change, and I’m sure more restaurants will start to include vegan options, especially with all the health benefits of the vegan diet that are so prominent in the news these days.  But we don’t seem to be at that place yet here in Ottawa.  But I remain hopeful that as more folks like ourselves ask for vegan dishes (or as in our case, almost raw vegan with a twist ;-) ) that the restaurants will start to adjust to meet the demand.

But for now, most times when we go out for dinner, I will ask them to create a big green salad with whatever fresh veggies they may have on hand, perhaps a side of cooked veggies, or mixing/matching existing menu options and that has always worked well for me.  At times I can select the vegetarian option but without the cheese, or other non-vegan additions.  And sometimes we will call in advance.  And although most restaurants are happy to make accommodations, we really wanted something extra special for our February celebrations this year.

I remembered we had tried The Wellington Gastropub for dinner in January and I absolutely loved the experience.  The service was impeccable, the atmosphere was relaxing and comfortable with a flare of upscale, the food was delicious and the waitress said the chef would gladly adjust any menu item to meet our dietary needs.  In fact, she mentioned it was very easy for them to accommodate as they feature a new menu every day. Every day!!  How many restaurants do that?  I love that – to me that means the ingredients, the ideas & the chef’s creations are fresh and exciting with each and every day!!  How great is that?  It’s no wonder The Wellington Gastropub is considered one of the best restaurants in the city!!  The result, my NEW favourite restaurant!!!

So when it came time to plan for our special event in February we contacted Chef Chris Deraiche, oh my goodness he was amazing!!   He was so accommodating and so willing to create something special for us – we could tell that the art of cooking really was his passion!!  For our first celebration he emailed us his menu ideas in advance and we loved (LOVED) his creativity.  Here is the amazing menu he prepared for us – Yum!!

winter squash & chipotle soup
vanilla oil
~~~
baby eggplant stuffed with ratatouille,
served with quinoa and basil sauce
~~~
lentil & mushroom fritters
w/ stewed eggplant & tomatoes, sesame seed & basil pistou
~~~
vanilla poached pear w/ cranberry-orange sorbet
When we arrived we were promptly taken to the best seat in the house!!  We had the window seat – what a great treat!!  We ordered a nice bottle of wine, and the meal extravaganza began…. all four courses were yummy!!  Chris visited us during the meal (it’s those little things that make a difference and show that they care) and it was great to meet the creator of our oh-so-great meal.  All-in-all an amazing evening, great food, great service and the best celebration ever.
Then, two weeks later we had our 2nd celebration.  We talked about returning to The Wellington Gastropub, but we thought perhaps we should try something different.  We called a couple of the other “top” restaurants in town but they weren’t that interested in accommodating our dietary needs.  In fact, one of the restaurants first asked us to give them menu ideas and/or they would gladly make a reservation for us at the top vegan restaurant in town!!  I found that very odd, sending us to another restaurant vs. letting us enjoy a new ambiance?  To me the message was pretty clear that they weren’t interested.  While I’m sure there are some (that we didn’t yet contact) that would be willing to accommodate us, it became pretty clear to us that many restaurants in town are not yet in a place where they are able (or willing) to accommodate for certain dietary needs.
This only reinforced my thoughts even more about The Wellington Gastropub!!  Without a doubt the wonderful creativity and accommodating nature of Chris Deraiche and the staff stands out from the rest within the city.  So once again we touched base with Chris and he was more than willing to welcome us with another special menu, in fact he said we are welcome to let him know any time we wish to visit the restaurant and he will gladly accommodate us.  Now that’s service!!!.
This time, we had so much trust in Chris’ creation that there was no need to see the menu in advance – it was a surprise, how I loved that. Again we arrived, Chris surprised us by giving us our “regular” table by the window (don’t you think it’s things like that that differentiate the ok restaurants from the amazingly superior restaurants?).  We were presented with our  personalized menu and once again the evening proceeded without a glitch!!  Everything was perfect.  The service was stellar.  I find the staff to be very attentive yet at the same time they don’t hover, I love that!  The meal, ambiance and service were once again excellent.   All in all an amazing celebration.
Without a doubt The Wellington Gastropub is my most favourite restaurant in the city.  If you are looking to enjoy an evening where the menu ideas are fresh and creative, the service is impeccable and the ambiance is warm and cozy without being pretentious, then The Wellington Gastropub is the place to visit.
From us, a special thank you to Chris & everyone who made our February 2012 celebrations so memorable.  We will be back!!
My NEW Favourite Book
My NEW Favourite Book
Ok, so I’m a bit of a book junkie when it comes to learning more about plant-based diets such as Raw Vegan, Vegan, Vegetarian  -  I love the learning and all the nutritional delights that come with that.
My latest discovery is “Crazy Sexy Diet” by Kris Carr.  Not only is the author amazing in the journey she has travelled since discovering she had stage 4 cancer in 2003, but the depth and breadth of knowledge she has gained on the impacts of nutrition are amazing!!!  She travelled all over the country to talk to the best of the best, she even went back to school to study nutrition.  And she shares all that she has discovered in her book.   It’s not so much the “diet” but the knowledge, insight, discoveries that she shares that (for me) have provided a deeper understanding into the “whys” so that I can make better decisions for my own nutrition.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand why your mind, body and soul can benefit from a vegan diet.   And it’s not just about what you eat, but it’s about what you Eat, Drink and Think that can and do affect your being, all three of which we have control over.
You can Order your copy of Crazy Sexy Diet here!! (no I don’t get $ from Kris Carr to promote this :-) I genuinely love her work!)
I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I have… I think this coming weekend is time for another read of her inspirational work!!!  Thanks Kris!!
Update since original post:  Kris Carr has a new book coming out Crazy Sexy Kitchen, it will be released October 2012.  I’ve pre-ordered my copy!!  You can also Pre-Order Crazy Sexy Kitchen!!  Or get a Sneak Peak of her recipes – Save the Tuna Salad Sandwich as well!!
Enjoy!!
