If you’ve been following me for a while, you will know that Green GREEN Smoothies are most definitely my favourite – I feel so much better when I reduce the fruit (i.e. include no more than 1-2 apples/pears and 1-2 limes/lemons) and combine with TONS of greens (i.e. any combination of celery, cucumber, broccoli stalks, parsley, cilantro, sprouts, leafy greens, ginger or garlic).
It’s this combo of minimal fruit and LOTS of greens that make you feel “cleaner”, have more energy, more “clarity of mind”, your skin/complexion will look & feel better (thanks to the hydrating cucumber & celery), your eyes will be clearer and brighter – Personally, I just love, LOVE how I feel when I get my megga dose of greens!
The difference you feel when you have a Green GREEN Smoothie vs. a more fruit based smoothie is like night and day. Not to say the fruit smoothies are not good for you. They are! All the ARV smoothies are super nutritious, but the Green GREEN Smoothies will bring you to a place where your energy levels, clarity of mind and overall well-being will be well beyond what the more fruit based smoothies could ever provide.
OK, but if you are new to Smoothies – don’t worry about all this Green GREEN Smoothie talk! If you are just starting to add more plant-based eats to your diet, and new to the smoothie world I recommend you start with more fruit and less greens until your taste buds have had a chance to adjust to the greens. I suggest you start with 80% fruit and 20% greens (spinach is a great mild green to start with) with the goal of working towards the reverse ratio, i.e. gradually reduce your fruit while increasing your greens until you reach a ratio of 80% greens and 20% fruit. It could take you a few weeks to make the shift or it might take you several months or longer – all you need to do is gradually add more greens with each smoothie and before you know it your body will start to crave CRAVE more and more greens (no really!!).

Today’s HOLY Green Goddess is a perfect example of one of my Green GREEN Smoothies…. this particular smoothie is also very high in fiber, an excellent source of vitamins A & C, high in potassium and it also provides an excellent dose of calcium & iron. Plus, if you enjoy a 2-litre servings like I often do, you will get a whopping 11 grams of wonderful plant-based protein!
Makes 2 litres (for me that’s 1 servings! ;-))
- 4 cups water
- 2 green apples, core removed and chopped
- 2 limes, peel removed and cut in quarters
- 2 inches fresh gingerroot
- 1/2 cucumber, chopped
- 3 stalks celery, chopped
- 2 cups sunflower sprouts
- 1/2 head romaine, chopped
Add all ingredients to the blender. Blend on low speed and gradually increase speed. Blend on high for a minute or two until smooth and frothy.
