I’m currently on a “green GREEN smoothie” kick 🙂  what that means is I’m using minimal fruit and mostly greens in my smoothies. I don’t know about you, but I feel sooooo much “cleaner” and “energized” when I enjoy really green smoothies.

If you aren’t there yet, don’t fret, before you know it your taste buds will adjust and your body will start to crave green GREEN smoothies !! No really! 😉 trust me, it comes with time and your body will absolutely love you once you start including more and more greens!

Today’s smoothie is very high source of dietary fiber, iron, potassium and Vitamin A & C.  It’s also a great source of calcium and vitamin B6 and as you will see below it also has high protein of 16.2 g per 500ml serving!!

Yield 3 x 500ml servings

  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 cucumber, chopped
  • 3-4 stalks celery, chopped
  • 1 broccoli stalk, chopped
  • 1-2 lemons, rind removed (the lemon helps “cut” the green taste, start with one lemon and add the second one if you really like that lemony flavour)
  • 2 inches of fresh ginger root
  • 1/2 bunch parsley
  • 2-3 VERY Big handfuls of spinach

Add all ingredients to the blender.  Blend on low speed and gradually increase speed.  Blend on high until smooth and frothy.  To learn more about how I create smoothies visit My Smoothie Approach and if you are looking for a blender visit my post on Choosing a Blender for some ideas that will fit any budget.

As a mini-day-cleanse I would enjoy the full batch (1.5 litires) myself during the morning/afternoon and then have a great big green salad with lots of greens (kale, spinach and/or romaine), sprouts, fresh veggies, a drizzle of olive oil and juice of 1/2 lemon for dinner!!  Mmmmmmm Mmmmmmm easy-peasy mini-day-cleanse! 😉

I will have to try the lemon. I make green smoothies daily for the family. Usually Spinac hor spinach kale mix. Sometimes Spring greens whatever is on sale. Add cucumber celery parsley , and everyone in our house needs more protein and calcium so we put a big spoonful of plain old fashioned greek yogurt. a splash of almond milk or coconut water , banana and then if they want fruit half an apple, pear, peach, kiwi or berries just to change it up. Sometimes I throw in a mint leaf or some raw honey if people are feeling a little off. I can’t get used to the unfilted honey yet, but I buy Organic Raw honey. My crazy 21 year old who works an odd schedule asked it I could make his and put in th refrig for him. Says he feels the nutrition soaking into his body when he drinks. They practically crave them!

    1. Oh my gosh, that’s fantastic Karen. I love that they crave them, it’s true once your body gets use to the goodness it wants more and more 😉 That’s so great you have found combinations that work for you and your family. So great to hear 😉 I bet you will love the addition of lemon as well. Enjoy! And thanks for sharing xox

  2. Candice says:

When you say one stalk of broccoli, are you including the head as well or just the base?

    1. Hi Candice, when I use broccoli in smoothies (and juices) I always use only the base/stalk and not the head. I keep the head for a salad or stir-fry! 😉 Catherine xox

  3. Somer says:

All right, I’ve not ventured into the world of all green yet, but this one nearly has me there.

    1. I can tell you this, once you go green your body will be hooked 😉

  4. Wow! That’s a VERY green smoothie. I’m impressed. I’m still working myself up to the green GREEN smoothies! I will get there.

    1. Enjoy the adventure. It will hit you quite quickly when it comes, you’ll be surprised! 😉 It just sort of happens, you don’t even have to think about it!

  5. I added Romaine to my fruit smoothie on Wednesday, and was surprised at how it brightened the flavor. I could taste the lettuce, but it didn’t bother me because of that brightening. I think I’m going to do a mini-cleanse on Sunday, and whip up this amazing-looking and -sounding smoothie. 🙂

    1. That’s great Ellen that you added romaine. I love romaine in smoothies, it’s such a nice mild green – I love how you describe that it “brightens” the smoothie 😉 You’ll have to let me know how your mini-cleanse goes… Enjoy!! xox
